Climate change is intensifying heat stress events for billions of farmed animals. Understanding the welfare impacts, the species most at risk, and the adaptation strategies available is increasingly urgent for livestock farmers, regulators, and consumers.
Heat stress in livestock causes welfare suffering across multiple dimensions simultaneously: elevated core body temperature causes physiological distress, panting and salivation are exhausting and stressful, appetite reduction impairs nutrition, and in severe cases heat stroke causes rapid deterioration and death. The welfare consequences of climate change for farmed animals are therefore both immediate and accumulating: individual heat stress events cause acute suffering, while chronic mild heat stress across extended seasons impairs immune function, reproductive success, and growth in ways that reduce overall welfare and health. Adaptation requires both short-term management interventions — shade access, ventilation, water misters — and longer-term structural changes including selective breeding for heat-tolerant genetics, architectural modifications to buildings, and system-level decisions about which livestock species can be maintained sustainably in increasingly warm climates.
