The quality of litter in broiler chicken housing is one of the most important determinants of welfare, affecting foot health, respiratory function, and overall bird comfort. Effective litter management is both a welfare imperative and an economic priority.
Litter quality represents one of the most direct welfare levers available to broiler producers because it determines the surface on which birds spend every minute of their lives. Wet, ammonia-saturated litter causes chemical burns to skin in contact with it — footpad dermatitis is painful and affects locomotion, feeding, and overall welfare. A bird with severe footpad dermatitis that cannot walk to feed and water points suffers both from the lesion itself and from secondary nutritional deprivation. The management factors that maintain litter quality are well-understood: appropriate stocking density to prevent excess moisture; effective ventilation to maintain airflow and dry the litter surface; nipple drinker adjustment to prevent leakage; and monitoring of bird health to catch enteric disease that causes wet litter. Higher-welfare systems with outdoor access allow litter drying naturally and further reduce the time birds spend on indoor litter surfaces.
