Loading and unloading concentrate multiple welfare risk factors into a brief period: novel environment, loss of social group, physical handling by humans, noise, and forced movement. Poor infrastructure amplifies all of these — steep ramps, slippery floors, sharp turns, and bottlenecks cause animals to baulk, fall, and injure themselves. Rushed handlers turn to electric prods, which cause acute pain and do not reduce loading time overall. The science of low-stress livestock handling, developed by Temple Grandin and others, demonstrates that facility redesign and behavioural training for handlers can dramatically reduce stress, injury, and electric prod use simultaneously. Circular race designs, non-slip flooring, solid sides to reduce distractions, and optimal lighting are the key infrastructure elements. Training handlers to use flags and boards rather than prods, and to work at the animal's own pace, delivers both welfare and productivity benefits.
