Reintroducing wolves to areas from which they were extirpated improves ecosystem health, but released individuals face significant welfare challenges in establishing territories and avoiding human conflict.
Wolf reintroduction offers significant ecological and population-level benefits, but the welfare costs to individual animals involved deserve careful consideration. The capture and translocation process imposes acute stress: wolves must be chemically immobilised, health-assessed, fitted with monitoring equipment, transported, and held in temporary facilities before release. Each of these stages involves fear and physiological stress for animals evolved to range freely. Post-release, reintroduced wolves face a survival gauntlet — unfamiliar terrain, potential interspecific competition, and lethal human persecution in areas with livestock conflict. The animals that survive this gauntlet and establish breeding territories contribute to ecological restoration; many do not. Best welfare practice in reintroduction programmes minimises handling time, uses the least stressful immobilisation protocols available, and invests in conflict mitigation infrastructure before wolves arrive in an area.
