Tilapia is among the most widely farmed fish globally, yet welfare standards in production remain poorly developed. Overcrowding, aggression, and poor water quality are the dominant welfare concerns.
Tilapia welfare has received less attention than salmon welfare despite comparable production volumes, partly because tilapia are perceived as robust, low-value fish. Research shows they are not welfare-insensitive: high-density culture generates chronic stress as evidenced by elevated cortisol, reduced immune function, and increased disease susceptibility. Male aggression in high-density systems causes fin and scale damage, lesions, and subordinate fish showing classic stress-related behaviour changes. The move to monosex culture (typically all-male) through hormonal sex reversal or YY chromosome breeding reduces aggression but involves welfare costs in the processing of fish that do not express the desired sex. Water quality management in earthen ponds is difficult and variable — ammonia and low dissolved oxygen events impose acute welfare costs on entire pond populations. As tilapia production grows, developing and enforcing welfare standards represents a significant opportunity to reduce suffering at scale.
