Antibiotic use in livestock affects animal welfare directly through treatment of disease, and indirectly through antibiotic resistance that threatens both animal and human medicine.
The welfare dimensions of antibiotic use in livestock are bidirectional. When antibiotics are used appropriately to treat bacterial disease, they directly improve welfare by resolving painful infections. When they are used routinely as growth promoters or preventive mass medication in lieu of improving husbandry, they mask welfare problems — disease pressure that would otherwise indicate unacceptable housing conditions is suppressed, allowing poor conditions to persist. This creates a perverse incentive: farms with the worst welfare may show acceptable health metrics because antibiotic prophylaxis conceals the disease that density, stress, and poor management generate. Reducing antibiotic use in livestock therefore requires improving welfare conditions simultaneously — the two goals are deeply linked. Higher-welfare, lower-density farming with better stockmanship reduces disease incidence and antibiotic demand together, delivering benefits for animal welfare and antimicrobial resistance management at the same time.
