Sea lice treatments in salmon farming involve mechanical, thermal, and chemical methods with significant welfare costs. Reducing treatment frequency through prevention is a priority for both welfare and resistance management.
Sea lice management represents one of the most significant ongoing welfare challenges in Atlantic salmon aquaculture. The lice themselves cause welfare harm through skin damage, chronic irritation, and physiological stress that compromises immune function. The treatments cause different welfare harm: thermal delousing (Thermolicer) causes acute thermal stress and physical injury; mechanical delousing (Hydrolicer) causes scale loss, injuries from water pressure, and handling stress; chemical treatments may cause respiratory distress. Treatment events typically occur multiple times per production cycle, meaning individual salmon may experience several acute stress events per year from delousing alone — on top of all other production stressors. The welfare ideal is prevention: well-managed cleaner fish programmes, submerged cage technology that keeps salmon below the infested surface layer, and deep-light systems that attract salmon away from lice-laden surface waters represent preventive approaches that reduce treatment frequency.
