Stork welfare along migratory flyways involves a sequence of hazards spanning multiple continents. Power line electrocution causes acute traumatic death — birds landing on distribution pylons with inadequate insulation are electrocuted, causing burns and cardiac arrest. This is preventable: insulating pylons or modifying their design eliminates the risk, and programmes in Spain and Portugal have dramatically reduced stork electrocution mortality. In Africa, illegal killing of wintering storks for food and traditional use causes mortality that the recovery of breeding populations in Europe partially masks. The shift to non-migratory behaviour around garbage dumps provides food security for individual birds but raises questions about nutritional adequacy of human waste diets and exposure to pollutants. Conservation interventions that address power line safety across the breeding range deliver the most direct welfare benefit.
