Amphibian welfare in captivity occupies a unique niche: these are among the most conservation-critical captive animals, with zoo populations often representing the last remnant of wild species. Welfare and conservation are inseparable — amphibians in poor welfare condition reproduce poorly and are more susceptible to disease outbreaks that could eliminate entire assurance populations. The welfare challenges are primarily physiological and environmental: maintaining precisely the right temperature, humidity, and UVB parameters is technically demanding and requires constant monitoring. Amphibian pain and distress responses are subtler than in mammals and birds, requiring trained observers who understand species-normal behaviour. Metabolic bone disease from vitamin D deficiency, osmotic stress from inappropriate water quality, and behavioural suppression from inadequate cover and hiding structure are the most common welfare problems. Getting these parameters right is both a welfare and conservation imperative.
