Heat stress in cattle is an escalating welfare problem that climate change is making increasingly severe. A heat-stressed cow experiences genuine discomfort: elevated body temperature, rapid breathing, excessive salivation, and behavioural desperation to find shade or cooling that may not be available. Chronic heat stress suppresses the immune system, impairs reproduction, and reduces the cow's ability to maintain physiological homeostasis — welfare consequences that compound over time and across heat events. In feedlot systems, where cattle are often housed on open lots with limited shade, extreme heat events cause preventable mass welfare events. Best-practice heat stress management combines structural interventions (shade, sprinklers, forced air ventilation), management adjustments (feeding timing to avoid heat peak, increased water access), and genetic selection for more heat-tolerant breeds or crosses in high-risk regions. Climate adaptation planning for livestock welfare is an urgent and underresourced area of farm animal welfare science.
