Trout welfare in aquaculture reflects the tension between economic production pressures and fish welfare needs that runs through the entire industry. Rainbow trout are active, relatively fast-swimming fish that require adequate space for normal movement and low enough density to avoid chronic social stress. The visible consequence of excessive density — fin erosion from repeated aggression — is both a welfare indicator and an economic signal (damaged fish have lower market value), creating partial alignment between welfare and commercial incentives. Water temperature management is critical: trout above thermal comfort threshold experience chronic physiological stress that compounds with density stress. Grading events impose acute stress through crowding, air exposure, and handling — welfare-positive grading involves minimal air exposure, adequate water during the process, and recovery time afterwards. Slaughter welfare is advancing: electrical stunning before killing is increasingly available and represents a significant improvement over live chilling or CO2.
