Dehorning cattle is widely practiced to reduce injury risk in herds, but causes significant pain. Evidence-based pain management and genetic polled alternatives are transforming the welfare picture.
Dehorning welfare is one of the clearest examples of a painful routine procedure for which both immediate pain management improvements and a long-term genetic solution exist. The immediate welfare improvement — providing local anaesthetic and post-procedural NSAIDs — reduces but does not eliminate pain from a procedure that causes measurable physiological and behavioural stress. Studies using validated pain assessment tools confirm that properly analgised dehorning still causes less than ideally managed pain, and that the recovery period involves ongoing discomfort. The long-term solution — breeding polled genetics into dairy and beef cattle populations — would eliminate the procedure entirely. Polled traits are available in Holstein, Simmental, and other breeds, and genome editing approaches can introduce polled alleles without other genetic change. The barrier to faster adoption is primarily economic inertia and concerns about other traits in polled genetics, not scientific or technological limitations.
