Polar bears are among the most controversial zoo animals — their large home ranges, specialist ecology, and visible welfare problems in poor enclosures have driven significant debate about whether they can be kept well in captivity.
Polar bears sit at the intersection of the most challenging welfare debates in zoo keeping. Their extreme range requirements cannot be replicated; their specialist ecology (ice, seals, Arctic cold) cannot be fully simulated. Yet the welfare outcomes in genuinely well-resourced modern facilities — with deep pools, naturalistic substrates, and intensive enrichment — are demonstrably better than in legacy concrete-and-tile enclosures. The question is not whether polar bears should ever be kept, but whether each holding institution meets the welfare standard these animals require. Facilities that cannot commit to the investment required should work with accreditation bodies toward responsible phase-out. The conservation value of captive populations increases as wild habitat degrades.
