Shrimp are the world's most traded seafood commodity by value, farmed in their billions under conditions that raise significant welfare concerns given emerging evidence of crustacean sentience.
Shrimp are among the most welfare-neglected farmed animals despite being consumed in enormous quantities globally. Eyestalk ablation — performed on virtually every female broodstock shrimp in intensive systems — is a painful mutilation with no welfare alternative currently deployed at scale. At the production level, crowding, disease pressure, and stressful handling impose welfare costs that are difficult to observe but increasingly well-evidenced. The Shrimp Welfare Project and Global Seafood Alliance are working on practical welfare improvements, but the scale of the industry and its global reach make regulatory change difficult. Consumer choice and corporate procurement commitments are currently the most tractable levers for change.
