Welfare Considerations

Hippos present some of the most demanding welfare requirements of any zoo megafauna. Their thermoregulatory dependence on deep water is absolute — facilities without adequate pools cannot meet basic welfare standards for this species. Their territorial aggression means that incompatible group compositions cause serious injury, and that space for retreat and separation must be designed into exhibits. Obesity from restricted movement and palatable captive diets is a chronic welfare problem — active dietary management and environmental design that encourages movement are required. Facilities that meet hippo welfare standards produce animals that are active, in good body condition, and able to express natural semi-aquatic behaviour.
