Shrimp are among the most consumed seafood globally, yet their capacity to suffer has only recently received serious scientific attention. Welfare improvements in shrimp aquaculture require tackling eyestalk ablation, high-density crowding, and slaughter methods.
Shrimp welfare is at an early but critical stage of scientific and commercial development. The extraordinary numbers involved — hundreds of billions of individuals — mean that even small per-animal welfare improvements have enormous aggregate impact. Eyestalk ablation is the most widely identified acute welfare harm in shrimp aquaculture, and alternatives including photoperiod manipulation to induce maturation without ablation are being developed and trialled. Slaughter methods that rapidly induce unconsciousness through clove oil immersion or electrical stunning are technically feasible but not yet standard. Crowding-related chronic stress affects immune function and growth performance — improving density management benefits both welfare and production outcomes.
