Channel catfish is the most farmed fish species in the United States. Understanding their welfare needs in pond-based aquaculture systems is essential as the industry grows and welfare standards are developed.
Catfish welfare in pond aquaculture is less studied than for salmonids but presents important challenges. The primary acute welfare events are hypoxic episodes from algal bloom collapse, crowding during harvest, and rough handling during transport and processing. Chronic welfare is affected by water quality management — high ammonia, low oxygen, and temperature extremes all cause persistent physiological stress. Harvest represents the most intensive welfare challenge: nets concentrate fish in conditions of extreme crowding before they are removed from water. Improving welfare requires investment in continuous dissolved oxygen monitoring, emergency aeration capacity, and more humane crowding and slaughter protocols. Consumer demand for responsibly produced catfish creates market incentives for welfare improvement.
