Reducing live animal transport distances is one of the highest-impact welfare improvements available in the livestock supply chain.
Long-distance live transport causes cumulative welfare impacts from feed and water deprivation, temperature extremes, injury, and stress. Replacing live export with refrigerated meat transport eliminates most of this suffering while maintaining trade economics. Short-distance transport with well-designed vehicles is unavoidable but significantly reduces the welfare burden.
