Predator attacks causing injury rather than instant death create acute welfare emergencies. Red mite infestations in roosting areas cause chronic anaemia and stress that owners rarely recognise. Veterinary care is typically absent — many owners do not view hens as patients warranting veterinary attention, meaning treatable conditions go unmanaged. Group dynamics in very small flocks can be problematic — three or four hens may lack sufficient space for lower-ranking birds to avoid dominant individuals. Welfare-positive backyard keeping requires predator-proof housing, regular parasite management, willingness to provide veterinary care, and appropriate flock sizes.
