European seabream and seabass are major aquaculture species in the Mediterranean, produced in offshore net cages. Their welfare is affected by stocking density, disease management, and slaughter method quality.
Mediterranean seabream and seabass welfare research is less developed than for Atlantic salmon, but these species demonstrate stress responses, nociception, and social hierarchy behaviours indicating welfare significance. Stocking density in net cages affects aggression and feeding access, with subordinate individuals suffering chronic food competition stress. Disease events cause acute welfare harm through pathogen effects and the stress of mass treatment. Slaughter welfare is the most significant identified welfare issue — ice slurry killing without prior stunning causes conscious death by suffocation over minutes. Electrical stunning before ice slurry is technically feasible and increasingly required by higher welfare certification schemes. Welfare improvements in this sector require both better disease prevention and humane slaughter investment.
