Untreated phobia tends to generalise over time, with dogs becoming fearful of an expanding range of sounds and situations. Owner responses significantly affect outcomes: inadvertent reinforcement of fear (excessive comfort-seeking, distress mirroring) can worsen long-term responses. Providing a safe den space, sound-dampening materials, and remaining calm is beneficial. Systematic desensitisation — gradual exposure to recorded sounds at sub-threshold intensity, paired with positive experiences — is the most effective long-term approach but requires time and professional guidance.
