Wild penguin welfare under climate stress operates at multiple timescales. Acute welfare events — starvation, oiling, entanglement — cause obvious immediate suffering measurable in body condition and behaviour. More pervasive is the chronic welfare impact of altered prey availability: penguins that must swim further for food return to colonies thinner, less able to thermoregulate and incubate eggs effectively, and more prone to disease. Breeding failure — itself a welfare-neutral event for the parents — becomes welfare-relevant through the suffering of chicks that hatch but cannot be fed adequately. Rehabilitation of oiled or stranded penguins involves significant welfare costs during capture, cleaning, and confinement that must be weighed against survival benefit. Long-term, the only meaningful welfare intervention for wild penguins is climate action — reducing emissions that drive ocean warming, acidification, and sea ice loss — alongside immediate measures to protect prey availability and reduce fishing bycatch.
