Litter quality is one of the most impactful welfare variables in commercial poultry production. Wet, ammonia-laden litter causes footpad dermatitis, hock burns, breast blisters, and respiratory disease.
Litter quality is a master welfare variable in intensive poultry production because it affects nearly every welfare domain simultaneously. Wet litter causes direct physical harm through contact lesions; it generates ammonia that irritates respiratory and ocular surfaces; and it reflects stocking density and ventilation failures that independently compromise welfare. Footpad dermatitis scoring at slaughter provides a retrospective welfare signal — birds arriving at the slaughterhouse with severe FPD suffered chronic discomfort throughout their rearing period. Forward-looking litter management requires appropriate bedding depth (minimum 5-8 cm), low-moisture feed formulations, nipple drinkers designed to prevent spillage, and ventilation sufficient to maintain ammonia below 20 ppm. Periodic litter removal and replacement during the production cycle is more effective than adding fresh material on top of wet substrate. The correlation between good litter management and productivity means farmer incentives and welfare incentives align well in this domain.
