Tail biting is a welfare indicator rather than a behaviour problem — it signals that pigs are in a system that cannot meet their behavioural needs. Addressing it through tail docking is analogous to treating a symptom while leaving the cause unchanged. Docking causes acute pain during the procedure (particularly without anaesthesia) and can cause chronic pain from neuroma formation at the cut site. The evidence base for prevention is robust: providing rooting substrate — even minimal straw or wood chip quantities — dramatically reduces biting incidence. Reducing stocking density, improving ventilation to reduce ammonia and thermal discomfort, ensuring adequate feeder space to prevent competition, and addressing health problems that cause tail-down postures (a key bite risk indicator) all address root causes. Early outbreak management — identifying the instigator, using anti-bite sprays, temporarily providing distraction enrichment — can interrupt outbreaks before they become severe. Systems that prevent tail biting by meeting pig behavioural needs entirely eliminate the welfare cost of routine docking.
