Feather-pecking is a welfare emergency when it becomes severe — hens targeted by injurious pecking suffer open wounds, exposure of underlying tissue, and in severe cases cannibalism. The pain is real and ongoing, and targeted birds rapidly develop fear-based behavioural changes. Prevention is vastly more welfare-positive than management after an outbreak. The science consistently identifies inadequate foraging substrate as the primary risk factor: hens given access to loose litter, pecking blocks, or forage material express oral foraging motivation safely and show dramatically lower feather-pecking rates. Dietary management — ensuring adequate protein, specific amino acids (methionine), and fibre — addresses nutritional drivers of pecking motivation. Breed selection for lower reactivity (slower-growing breeds) reduces outbreak risk in high-density systems. Early warning systems that detect escalating mild pecking before severe injury occurs — through behavioural monitoring or feather damage scoring — allow management intervention before flock-wide welfare collapse.
