Binturongs, also known as bearcats, are large arboreal viverrids with complex social and environmental needs. Providing appropriate zoo habitats is key to their wellbeing in captivity.
Binturongs in inadequate zoo environments show stereotypic pacing, reduced activity, and poor body condition. Their strong arboreal nature means horizontal space alone is insufficient — vertical complexity, climbing ropes, platforms at varying heights, and retreat spaces away from public view are essential. As slow-moving, crepuscular animals, they can be easily overwhelmed by visitor noise and activity during peak hours. Zoos that provide nocturnal or low-visitor-pressure environments with rich arboreal enrichment see much better welfare outcomes in terms of natural behaviour expression and reproductive success.
