Wild wolverines face welfare threats from both habitat loss and direct human persecution. Trapping causes intense acute suffering through limb injuries, dehydration, and exposure. Where wolverines are legally trapped, welfare standards for trap types and check frequencies vary enormously. Snares and leg-hold traps are documented to cause injuries including fractures, joint dislocations, and self-mutilation as animals attempt to escape. In areas where wolverines are protected, their primary welfare challenge is habitat compression from climate change, which forces longer travel distances and reduces denning success.
