Organic, free-range, and barn egg production systems differ significantly in their welfare outcomes. Understanding the evidence helps consumers and retailers make informed choices.
The evidence suggests that well-managed organic and free-range systems generally provide better welfare than barn systems due to outdoor access enabling more complete natural behaviour expression. However, outdoor access only benefits hens if the range is attractive, shaded, and low in stocking pressure — poorly managed free-range systems may see hens confined indoors most of the time. Organic systems tend to have stricter stocking density and management requirements that produce more consistent welfare outcomes across farms. The best welfare outcomes occur in systems where both indoor environment quality and outdoor range quality are actively managed and monitored.
