Fennec foxes are small, social canids from North African deserts. Their specialised behaviours and social needs make them challenging but rewarding animals to care for in zoos.
Fennec foxes in captivity — whether in zoos or as pets — suffer significantly when their digging, foraging, and social needs are not met. Their small size and apparent cuteness make them popular exotic pets, but few private owners can meet their specialised needs for deep sand substrates, social companions, nocturnal activity space, and stimulation. In well-managed zoo settings with naturalistic desert exhibits, pairs or family groups, and nocturnal house access, fennec foxes show good welfare through play, digging, and foraging behaviour. The exotic pet trade in fennec foxes causes significant welfare harm and should not be supported.
