Rainbow trout welfare in aquaculture is supported by a more developed scientific evidence base than most other farmed fish species. Research has established clear welfare indicators, effective stunning methods, and the welfare costs of crowding and poor water quality. The challenge is translating this science into widespread industry adoption. Stocking density management, water quality monitoring, minimally stressful handling protocols, and mandatory pre-slaughter stunning are all achievable improvements. Trout also show evidence of anticipatory behaviour and learning, suggesting richer cognitive lives than often assumed.
