Crowding during routine husbandry operations is one of the most significant and frequently occurring welfare stressors for farmed Atlantic salmon.
Crowding stress is an unavoidable feature of intensive salmon farming but its severity and frequency vary enormously between farms and management systems. Acute crowding during treatment or harvest causes rapid deterioration in water quality within the confined space — oxygen drops, CO2 rises, and stressed fish produce lactate that further acidifies the water. Repeated acute stress events impair immune function and increase disease susceptibility. Welfare-conscious salmon producers minimise crowding frequency and duration, use oxygen supplementation during crowded operations, and monitor fish behaviour and physiological stress markers to guide management decisions.
