Feedlot cattle experience multiple simultaneous welfare challenges: restriction of natural grazing behaviour, environmental conditions that may include heat stress, dust, or mud, social disruption from mixing unfamiliar animals, and the metabolic challenge of transitioning to high-grain diets. The transition period is particularly high-risk for acidosis, which causes pain from digestive inflammation. Well-managed feedlots with adequate space, shade, clean water, careful diet transition protocols, and rapid treatment of respiratory disease can achieve acceptable welfare outcomes. However, the restriction of natural movement and grazing remains a fundamental welfare cost of the feedlot system.
