Firework fear causes acute and severe distress in affected dogs. The unpredictable, sudden, and loud nature of fireworks triggers the startle and flight response, and the inability to escape from the perceived threat produces panic in highly fearful individuals. Dogs have been killed fleeing firework noise — running into roads or injuring themselves forcing through windows or fences. The welfare impact is both acute (terror during events) and potentially chronic (anticipatory anxiety as bonfire night approaches in countries with predictable firework seasons). Combining long-term desensitisation with acute pharmacological management provides the most complete welfare support for severely affected dogs.
