Manatees are slow-moving, gentle herbivores threatened by boat propeller injuries, cold stress events, and habitat degradation. Their welfare and conservation status are closely linked.
Manatees struck by boat propellers experience severe trauma — lacerations to the body and flippers, broken ribs, and internal injuries. Propeller strikes that do not kill immediately cause ongoing pain and impaired movement that reduces foraging efficiency and social participation. Cold stress events cause manatees to congregate in unnaturally high densities near warm water outflows, and if those outflows decrease or fail, mass cold-stunning events result in widespread acute suffering. Red tide algal bloom events expose manatees to brevetoxins causing neurological symptoms, respiratory distress, and death. These multiple simultaneous threats make manatee welfare management an active, urgent concern.
