Welfare Considerations

Pools must be deep enough for diving and large enough for swimming — shallow decorative ponds are insufficient. Feeding enrichment using live or frozen fish introduced into water engages their aquatic hunting motivation and provides cognitive challenge. Fishing cats in well-designed aquatic exhibits with regular fish-based enrichment show excellent welfare through high activity levels, diverse behaviour, and low stereotypy rates.
