Welfare Considerations

Narwhal welfare is threatened by both chronic and acute harms from Arctic change. Ship noise causes documented cardiac freeze responses — narwhals exposed to vessel noise stop swimming, sink, and show elevated heart rates consistent with extreme fear. As Arctic sea ice diminishes and shipping traffic increases, these encounters become more frequent. Acute savssat events — entrapments in rapidly closing sea ice — cause mass drowning events of dozens to hundreds of individuals that are catastrophic welfare incidents as well as conservation losses. Climate change is the overriding driver of both threats, making climate action the most impactful intervention for narwhal welfare.
