Wolverines are elusive, wide-ranging mustelids that present significant welfare challenges in zoo settings due to their enormous natural home ranges and complex habitat needs.
Wolverines are among the most challenging species to manage well in captivity. Their vast wild home ranges cannot realistically be replicated in any zoo setting, making behavioural enrichment and active management of their environment critical welfare compensating factors. Stereotypic pacing is a common welfare indicator in wolverines with insufficient space or environmental complexity. The few institutions that hold wolverines successfully invest heavily in exhibit size, terrain variety, and rotational access to different enclosure spaces. Given these challenges, the welfare case for wolverine captivity is strong only where breeding programmes contribute meaningfully to conservation and where welfare standards are genuinely exceptional.
