Canine parvovirus (CPV) causes severe haemorrhagic gastroenteritis and remains one of the most serious infectious welfare threats to unvaccinated dogs worldwide, particularly young puppies.
The welfare impact of parvovirus infection is severe. Affected puppies experience intense vomiting, profuse and bloody diarrhoea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and dehydration. The infection progresses rapidly — animals can deteriorate from mild illness to critical condition within 24–48 hours. Hospitalisation typically involves multiple painful or uncomfortable interventions including IV catheter placement, fluid administration, and sometimes nasogastric feeding. Even with treatment, surviving puppies may experience prolonged recovery and intestinal damage that affects nutrient absorption long-term. The psychological welfare of isolated hospitalised puppies — separated from their litter and owners during a critical socialisation window — also warrants attention. Prevention through timely vaccination is highly effective and cost-efficient compared to treatment. Responsible breeding, proper quarantine protocols, and public education about vaccination schedules are the most powerful tools available for population-level welfare protection.
