Weaning is one of the most stressful events in a pig's life, combining abrupt maternal separation, social disruption, dietary change, and environmental novelty simultaneously. Understanding and mitigating this stress is a key priority in pig welfare science.
The welfare burden at weaning is substantial. Piglets separated from their mother vocalise intensely for 24–72 hours, show elevated stress hormone levels, reduced immune function, and disrupted sleep. The gut microbiome — still developing at three weeks of age in intensively produced pigs — faces major disruption when milk is replaced by solid feed, predisposing animals to diarrhoeal disease and intestinal inflammation. Mixing unfamiliar piglets at weaning triggers aggression as hierarchies are re-established, causing skin lesions and subordinate individuals to be displaced from food. Many conventional systems use prophylactic antibiotics in the post-weaning period to manage PWD, raising antibiotic resistance concerns. Welfare improvements include later weaning, gradual feed introduction (creep feeding before weaning), enriched housing, smaller stable social groups at mixing, and avoiding unnecessary management procedures coinciding with weaning. Farmer education on recognising early signs of post-weaning stress is critical for timely intervention.
