Ringworm causes moderate direct welfare impact through skin discomfort, pruritus, and the stress of repeated handling for treatment. However, the welfare consequences of management decisions are often more significant. In shelters, cats with ringworm are frequently isolated, sometimes for weeks or months, causing social deprivation, boredom, and elevated stress — conditions that can impair immune function and paradoxically slow recovery. Aggressive environmental decontamination protocols may involve repeated bathing and topical treatments that many cats find highly aversive. Without a clear treatment protocol, animals may be euthanised despite having a fully treatable condition. In home settings, the burden of treatment falls on owners, and compliance issues — skipping doses, discontinuing treatment early — are common and can lead to treatment failure and prolonged suffering. The zoonotic risk also increases pressure to treat rapidly, sometimes in ways that prioritise human safety over cat welfare. Shelter foster programmes, where cats recover in home environments rather than stressed shelter conditions, have shown significantly better outcomes.
