The fossa's welfare in captivity is closely tied to enclosure complexity, feeding enrichment, and appropriate social management. Animals denied adequate climbing structures, varied terrain, and hunting-mimetic feeding opportunities show classic carnivore stereotypies — pacing, circling, and repetitive pawing. Their natural solitary nature means that pairings or group housing must be managed carefully, with clear escape routes and visual barriers to prevent chronic aggression. Feeding enrichment — hiding prey items, using puzzle feeders, and varying food presentation — is among the most effective welfare interventions known for captive fossas. Behavioural monitoring should track time-budget data: well-cared-for fossas show diverse activity profiles including exploration, climbing, and resting in elevated positions.
