Shrimp welfare represents one of the most numerically significant animal welfare challenges in existence, involving potentially hundreds of billions of sentient individuals annually. The evidence base for shrimp sentience, while still debated, has strengthened considerably: crustaceans show avoidance learning, show reduced responses to nociceptive stimuli when treated with analgesics, and exhibit stress responses physiologically analogous to those in vertebrates. Slaughter welfare is a particular concern — ice slurry immersion, the most widely used commercial method, appears to cause a period of distress before death, and boiling alive at high densities is a standard retail and restaurant practice. High-stocking-density farming conditions associated with economic pressure create environments where disease outbreaks — including early mortality syndrome (EMS/AHPND) and white spot disease — are common, causing mass mortality with welfare consequences. The emerging field of shrimp welfare science is developing stunning and slaughter methods, welfare indicators, and husbandry improvements that could meaningfully reduce suffering at this extraordinary scale.
