Lambing season concentrates welfare challenges for both ewes and neonates into a short, intensive period. Ewes facing difficult births experience pain and exhaustion that, if veterinary assistance is unavailable or delayed, can be prolonged and severe. Newborn lambs are highly vulnerable: they must suckle colostrum within the first 6 hours of life to acquire passive immunity, must dry off rapidly to avoid hypothermia, and must successfully bond with their mother to receive ongoing nutrition. Each failure point — a cold wet night, a ewe that rejects her lamb, colostrum unavailability — can cause suffering and death within hours. High-stocking-density indoor lambing can impair maternal bonding by preventing ewes from separating adequately from the flock to focus on their lambs, while inadequate individual pen provision means that ewes giving birth may do so in high-traffic areas where bonding is disrupted. Improving lambing welfare requires investment in stock-person training, adequate shelter, individual bonding pens, colostrum banking, and lambing monitoring technology.
