Wolverines are remarkable apex scavengers and predators of boreal and arctic wilderness. Climate change, habitat fragmentation, and trapping pressure threaten both their populations and the welfare of individual animals.
Wild wolverine welfare is primarily impacted by trapping and climate-driven den failure. Leghold and other traps used in wolverine trapping cause acute tissue trauma, freezing in cold conditions, and distress from sustained restraint — trapped wolverines cannot escape or seek shelter and may remain alive in traps for extended periods in extreme cold. Den failure from reduced snowpack causes direct welfare harm to kits born into inadequate thermal shelter and, at the population level, reduces reproductive success in a species already characterised by low reproductive rates. Human-wolverine conflict over livestock and stored food is a secondary welfare concern: wolverines accessing mountain livestock may be shot or poisoned by farmers, causing acute suffering. As wilderness advocates and climate indicators, wolverines serve as a flagship species whose individual welfare and population trends reflect the broader health of northern and alpine ecosystems under anthropogenic pressure.
