Sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are the primary parasite challenge in Atlantic salmon farming. Managing lice infestations requires interventions that themselves carry significant welfare costs — understanding these trade-offs is essential for welfare-positive aquaculture.
Sea lice management in salmon farming creates a welfare dilemma: untreated lice infestations cause progressive welfare harm to salmon, but the treatments currently available also cause welfare harm during application. Hydrogen peroxide bath treatments applied in well boats expose fish to oxidant concentrations that cause gill epithelial damage — in stressed or weakened fish, the mortality rate from treatment can exceed 1%, representing tens of thousands of fish in a single event. Thermal lice treatments (thermolicer) use hot water immersion at temperatures that immobilise lice; fish stressed by treatment show elevated cortisol and reduced immune function in the days following. Mechanical treatments involving pumping, crowding, and pressure washing cause physical injury including scale loss and fin damage. The cleaner fish welfare problem compounds this: wrasse and lumpfish placed in salmon cages to eat lice have extremely high mortality rates (often 30–50% annually) in standard production conditions, representing a hidden welfare cost of biological control methods. Improving sea lice management welfare requires investment in laser lice removal systems, functional vaccine development, and better wrasse welfare standards.
