Injurious feather pecking (IFP) is one of the most serious and economically significant welfare problems in laying hen production, causing pain, tissue damage, and in severe cases, cannibalism and death.
Injurious feather pecking represents a welfare problem with both direct and indirect dimensions. The direct welfare impact — pain from feather loss and skin lesions, distress from being persistently pecked, and the severe suffering of birds that become targets of escalating cannibalism — is substantial. Beak-trimmed birds experience post-procedural pain and permanent alteration of beak sensory function, which is itself a welfare cost borne to prevent the worse welfare outcome of IFP injury. The indirect welfare impact comes from the management responses that IFP outbreaks often provoke: emergency lighting changes, separation and isolation of injured birds, and increased handling all add stress to the flock. Preventing IFP requires a systems approach: addressing the multiple interacting risk factors — nutrition, environment, genetics, management — rather than relying solely on beak trimming as a default control. Research consistently shows that the most effective prevention combines good litter quality, appropriate light intensity, nutritional adequacy, and early-life foraging experience.
