Beef feedlots concentrate large numbers of cattle in confined areas for rapid weight gain before slaughter. Their welfare implications — including heat stress, respiratory disease, and restricted movement — require careful management to minimise suffering.
Feedlot welfare challenges are concentrated in several key areas. Heat stress in summer months causes reduced feed intake, elevated respiratory rate, altered posture, and in extreme events, death from hyperthermia. Cattle bred for high muscle deposition are particularly vulnerable because their metabolic heat production is elevated. Shade provision is the most direct intervention but is economically resisted in many operations. Bovine respiratory disease represents a combination of welfare harm (acute and chronic respiratory illness causing pain, reduced appetite, and distress) and economic loss — the alignment of welfare and financial incentives here creates some opportunity for improvement. Receiving stress — the period immediately after transport and mixing when cattle are most vulnerable to disease — is a critical welfare window. Metaphylactic antibiotic treatment at receiving, while effective at reducing BRD incidence, raises antibiotic stewardship concerns. Pain management for castration and dehorning at feedlot entry is a clear welfare improvement opportunity in operations that still perform these procedures without analgesia.
