However, these short-term welfare costs are weighed against the long-term welfare and conservation benefits of restored wild populations able to express natural behaviours across natural landscapes. The developing field of reintroduction welfare science is establishing protocols to minimise capture stress, optimise group composition for release, and monitor individual welfare in the critical post-release period.
