Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most economically significant disease in beef and dairy cattle worldwide and one of the most important welfare problems in the industry. Understanding its causes and prevention is essential for improving cattle welfare.
BRD causes sustained, cumulative welfare harm across a large proportion of commercial beef cattle. The acute phase — with high fever, severe respiratory distress, and systemic illness — represents significant suffering in an animal that is already stressed from transport and mixing. Without rapid detection and treatment, pneumonia can progress to pleuropneumonia or septicaemia within days. Even with antibiotic treatment, recovery is not always complete: post-mortem studies consistently find chronic consolidation in the lungs of cattle that appeared to recover clinically, suggesting persistent sub-clinical respiratory compromise during the finishing period. The herd-level scale of BRD means that even modest reductions in incidence through improved preventive protocols translate into welfare improvements for hundreds of thousands of animals annually. Welfare-focused receiving programmes — allowing cattle adequate rest, water, and high-quality feed before stressful procedures — and vaccination protocols tailored to incoming pathogen risk significantly reduce BRD burden.
