Wolverines require vast wilderness areas and persistent spring snowpack to survive and reproduce. Their population status and welfare are sensitive indicators of wilderness quality and climate change impacts.
Wild wolverine welfare at the individual level is most impacted by trapping and den disturbance. Leg-hold and Conibear traps used in wolverine trapping cause acute tissue trauma and prolonged distress from restraint — trapped wolverines in remote locations may remain alive for extended periods in extreme cold before trappers check their lines. The psychological distress of restraint in a species that normally ranges hundreds of kilometres is significant. At the population level, climate change creates a systemic welfare challenge by reducing reproductive success through snowpack loss — females that successfully conceive but cannot access adequate deep snow for denning may experience reproductive failure that represents a welfare harm as well as a conservation concern. The small US population size means that individual welfare events — deaths, injuries, failed reproductions — have magnified population-level consequences in a species that cannot rapidly replace adult losses.
